The latest on Lufthansa

While Lufthansa faced disruption yesterday as cabin crew union UFO staged a one-day strike affecting departures from Frankfurt and Munich, as well as CityLine operations at nine German airports, the group has concurrently been advancing several initiatives across product, network and alliance.
One of the most significant recent developments is the launch of FOX, Lufthansa’s new Future Onboard Experience. The new service concept entered First Class on March 29 and is one of the largest investments in the onboard experience in the airline’s history, following a two-year development process involving more than 110 test flights, over 500 crew members and feedback from more than 9000 guests. On long-haul services, First Class passengers now receive a redesigned premium offer including menus by two-Michelin-starred chef Christoph Kunz, a new champagne selection including Veuve Clicquot La Grande Dame, and BABOR skincare products. Lufthansa says FOX will expand to Business, Premium Economy and Economy from May.
At the group level, Lufthansa also reached an important strategic milestone with ITA Airways formally joining Star Alliance on April 1. The move connects ITA’s Rome Fiumicino and Milan Linate hubs to the alliance network of more than 1150 destinations worldwide and gives customers access to through check-in, reciprocal frequent flyer benefits and alliance lounge access. Lufthansa Group supported the integration process, and with ITA’s entry Star Alliance now counts 26 member airlines and more than 17500 daily flights across over 190 countries.
Lufthansa Group has also outlined a broader network push for summer 2026. The group plans around 1600 additional departures from its hubs across Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian Airlines and Brussels Airlines, partly enabled by reallocating capacity from the Middle East in response to shifting demand patterns. Lufthansa alone plans additional India frequencies from Frankfurt to Chennai and Delhi, plus extra Hyderabad and Bangalore services, while also increasing capacity to Southern Europe. At the same time, the carrier has been using its centenary year to reinforce its brand position: on April 6, Lufthansa marked 100 years since its first flights with anniversary services retracing the original Berlin-Zurich and Berlin-Cologne routes.
In short, even as operational tensions continue to affect passengers today, Lufthansa’s recent announcements show an airline pushing ahead on premium service, alliance integration, network recalibration and brand positioning at the same time.
