Lie-flat luxury goes short-haul: Etihad’s new A321LR – World’s first single-aisle jet with first class and new destinations

Etihad Airways is redefining short and medium-haul travel.

With the arrival of its first Airbus A321LR in August 2025, the airline introduced something no other single-aisle aircraft has ever offered: a dedicated first-class cabin with enclosed suites. Ten more aircraft will follow by the end of the year, supporting a broad rollout from Abu Dhabi’s Zayed International Airport.
The A321LR made its debut on the Abu Dhabi–Phuket route, with more destinations joining the schedule through 2025. The rollout includes Algiers, Athens, Bangkok, Chennai, Chiang Mai, Copenhagen, Düsseldorf, Kolkata, Krabi, Medan, Milan, Paris, Phnom Penh, Phuket, Riyadh, Tunis, and Zurich.
At the front of the aircraft, the two First Suites are set in a 1-1 configuration, offering fully enclosed private spaces with sliding doors, lie-flat beds and companion seating that can accommodate a buddy seat with an optional bassinet. Each suite features a cocktail table, wireless charging, PC power, USB-A and USB-C ports, plus a 20-inch 4K touchscreen with Bluetooth audio. The experience extends onto the ground with concierge planning, chauffeur transfers, lounge access, boarding escorts and porter-assisted arrivals.
Business Class features a 1-1 herringbone layout with 14 seats that convert into 78-inch beds. Travellers benefit from 17.3-inch 4K screens, Bluetooth audio, wireless charging and generous personal storage.
Economy remains well-considered, with 144 seats measuring 18.4 inches across, among the widest in this aircraft category. Each seat includes a 13.3-inch 4K touchscreen, ergonomic recline and USB charging.
Across all cabins, passengers can connect to Viasat’s next-generation system, delivering speeds up to 1Gbps and supporting streaming, gaming, social media and live TV from gate to gate.
Etihad is also expanding its network, with Medina added in November 2025 and new routes to Baku, Yerevan, Tbilisi, Almaty, Bucharest and Tashkent launching from March 2026.
With long-haul standards now appearing on short and medium routes, Etihad’s A321LR signals a clear shift in how regional travel is designed and delivered.
As part of Sleepflyer’s ongoing look at the future of premium travel, this development marks a notable shift in how comfort is approaching the short-haul market. It also reflects a growing trend in giving travellers space to unwind, reset and even sleep in true comfort on routes where rest was rarely possible.
